Share the road! or Don’t tread on me!!

Posted by Pat J on May 29, 2009

I don’t know if I have mentioned it before, but my preferred method of exercise is riding my 24″, 3 speed Desoto tricycle around the lakes of my neighborhood. It’s great because we have a lot of bike lanes and wide sidewalks. I have been triking since last August on a daily basis. Though I’ve had my trike for about 7 years, I’ve just rediscovered it as my form of regular exercise. I ride from 25 to 55 minutes on most days of the week. This is a great form of outdoor exercise for AZ because you can get out on almost every day of the year, even on the occasional rainy days (it doesn’t rain all day long). I’ve always been an active person but hsve not stuck with any one form of excercise for very long until now.

My bike is equipped with a coaster and 1 hand break, rearview mirror, LOUD airbulb style horn, LED magnetic operated front and rear lights (visible even in the day time), an odometer with time, mph, distance traveled, total and trip, fastest mph on any trip and average speed, a front basket for going to get the mail, a rear large basket for taking my sales to the shipping store (we have 2 in the neighborhood), all of this and an orange flag on a pole behind my ‘generous’ sized seat (the trike’s seat, that is!). Hard to miss seeing me, right?

Traffic is usually very respectful of my space and I am very respectful of theirs (they’re bigger that me!). I stay in my lane, I use my hand signals, I set my ipod at a volume so that I can still hear what’s going on around me, especially when a car is approaching from behind. When I’m at a crossing I go with the light. Most cars respect me although I’ve had to do a few panic stops when someone is not following the rules, really the laws, or just not paying attention.

For instance, this morning when I was out at 6:30 am on my ride and I was waiting at my usual light to cross over the 4 lanes to continue, I had a close call with a car. I was on the sidewalk when the pedestrian light turned white that told me I could cross. The car on my left suddenly decided that it was her turn to go and pulled right in front of me to make a right hand turn. I was shocked! I just yelled. Hey! Her window was slightly open on the passenger side and I could see that she was reaching across to her dashboard for something, maybe her radio, and was not paying attention. What a dummy! No, I didn’t give her any gestures of “cheer” with my finger or fingers, but I sure wanted to give her something, a rap along side the head, maybe?

Yes, I continued my ride, got 50 minuits clocked in for today. I was watching, and I will continue to ride my trike for fun and errands and especially exercise! But please! Please! Please! Watch out for the Bikes and Tricycles and don’t tread on me! The life you save may be my own. And for the woman with the short dark hair in the dark green suv, “watch out, I’ll be watching for YOU!”

Respectfully submitted

New project… gotta’ get to it!

Posted by Pat J on May 25, 2009

Hi, Everyone,

I sold a couple of my “chapstick necklaces” this week.  Did the humidity suddenly go out of the air this week, and my customers need them?  That’s ok, but I thought of a variation to the necklace which I will be previewing here in the next couple of weeks.  Until then…

Chapstick Necklaces:

- – - -

But here’s a little ditty…

Two brothers were always getting into trouble in their neighborhood. The people in the neighborhood started complaining to the parents about the boys. So the boys parents decided to have their priest talk to the boys. The priest asks to speak to the boys alone, requesting to see the youngest first. The young boy comes in and sits at a large table across the room from the priest. The priest looks at the boy, points at him and, trying to emphasize that God is in everyone, asks, “Where is God?” The boy looks around the room and back at the priest and says nothing. Again, the priest points at the boy and in a louder voice asks, “Where is God?” The boy says nothing. The priest walks around the table, pointing inches from the boy’s face and asks again, “Where is God?” The boy jumps out of his chair and runs out the door. The boy runs right home, grabs his older brother and says to him, “We are in BIG trouble!” His brother replies, “We haven’t done anything!” The younger brother replies, “God’s missing, and they think we did it!”

Did I tell ya’ this one?

Thanks for reading!

Bead Bezeled Dichroic Glass

Posted by Pat J on May 17, 2009

Bead Bezeled Dichroic Glass – Item pd0010di

Ok, so my dictionary doesn’t know the term bezeled, but it knows bezel as “a grooved ring holding the glass or plastic cover of a watch face or other instrument in position.” ref: Oxford  American Dictionary. But I know that it really is indeed a ring, or oval, or other shape forming a bead woven frame around an article such as a piece of glass, in order to enhance the beauty of the piece selected. ref: Pat of Beads I View by Pat.

I often use Dichroic glass “leftovers” to form a bead “bezeled”, (verb form and past tense of bezel) pendant that turns into a very beautiful piece of crafted art jewelry which is by it’s nature highly reflective to differing light situations.  (Dichroic Glass is glass treated with layers of metal oxides) .  I call these raw pieces leftovers because they are pieces that are unused, scraps, left when someone has used the main body of the glass to create another work of art and have left these “chips” to be disposed of.  These chips are sold in bundles of varying shapes and sizes,  colors and textures, and may be translucent or have a black coating on the back.  When I buy a batch of this glass I generally have a few choices as to some of these qualities, but not all.  Some pieces may not be usuable for my purposes, but I take what I can get and look to each piece to tell me how it wants to be enhanced.

I start preparing a piece  for bezeling by considering it’s shape  and  what colors of beads might complement the color tones that are reflected in the “chip”.  This can be hard because of the fact that the light will be different at different times, different ambient light causes the colors to appear to change, thus the natiure of Dichroic Glass.

Grinding the edges mostly smooth comes next, and reshaping if necessary.  It is after all a piece of glass that was broken off from a larger piece, probably first being scored with a glass cutter and them “snapped” to break it to its desired shape.  This leaves sharp raw edges on my “chip”.

After grinding, I place a piece of leather or ultra suede on the back of the piece and fit it then glue it to my chip.  By then I will have decided if I wanted to leave a hole in the center of the leather and done so. I would have chosen  this tact if it is a transluscent chip, that wanted  light to pass through and react with what may be worn underneath it in the future.

I then cut the leather leaving  it about 1/8th to 1/16th inch larger than the shape on all edges.  This varies, depending on the size of the beads that were choosen to be used and the stitch design.  I use a quality jewelers glue, non toxic, and water cleanup and allow it to dry for a full day before beading around the piece. I use peyote stitch quite often for my beaded woven bezel designs, but have also used others.  Size of beads might be 15/0 (very small) to 6/0 ( larger) in the color or colors  which ‘I’ve been told to use’, or any combination of sizes and colors thereof.   It will have also have chosen a “way” to hang, as most of the chips are not a perfect square, rectangle or oval or round!

If the piece created is a pendant I will have chosen  to use either a silver bail and glued that to the piece prior to the glueing of the leather, or I will have decided to sew or weave a bail incorporating it into the bezel design from which it will hang.

I have included a few pictures of the finished products.  I enjoy creating these items for others and myself as well!  Please see more at Beads I View by Pat.

Ok, thanks for sticking with me to here, and now for something a little different:

The income tax expert was visiting the school to talk about taxes.

“I’m going to tell you now about “indirect” taxes.

Can anybody tell me what an indirect tax is?”
“A dog license,” said Smart Josh.
“And why is that?” asked the expert.
“The dog doesn’t pay it,” replied Josh.

Thanks for reading.

..Hi,

A couple of my $10.00 Specials

Hi, ALL!

Ok, it’s been just a few days since I put my $10 Specials category on my web site, but I’ve had s little interest already… no sales as yet, but interest in the form of visitors. I think that everyone looks for bargains, and a site such as mine, where I aim to sell more designer fashion jewelry needs a page like this. I’m hopeful for more action at my store during the coming months.  Remember, I do custom work also.  Visit me at Beads I view by Pat for beautiful and sometimes unusual jewelry and crafted items.

And now for something that was recently sent to me by that best friend of mine… he’s always thinking of things that I love to see.  Hawaii is one of my favorite places, and we’ve been there several times (my Navy CPO son and family is now based there, and has been on and off in the past decade).  These  pictures and more like them can be found on the net.  These incredible images of waves were taken by the number 1 photographer of surf: Clark Little. He has dedicated his life to photographing the waves and has published a selection of the the best images of his career. He captures magical moments inside the “tube”, as surfers say.

Enjoy!
