Reading, learning, family,

I’ve dedicated the last 3 days to further education in my choice of crafts and in beading in general. There’s really so much more that I could be doing, and I want to know much more. I have been designing and creating beaded jewelry and crafted beadwork for over 8 years. I have only taken a very few hours of formal lessons here and there. I have learned mostly from books and from seeing, and listening to what people like. I guess I am a sort of interpreter. I translate or interpret what is said or how a person reacts to something that I make. I think that’s why no two of my created items are exactly alike.

I’ve approached this education by reading   some of the beading books which I’ve had around for some time but have previously used to look up one certain thing. I decided to take a more thorough approach this time. I set my sights on some of the sections in which I thought I would not be interested. So, in my pursuits, I think I’ve picked up at least 4 or 5 more thing to try, including a couple of new bead weaving stitches.  (below is an example of one of my first learned beading techniques)

Beaded Ornament Ball

Now, to find time to actually do them. The family is coming into town the week after next. there’s a new place that I have been considering setting up a satellite store to my existing web store, Beads I View by Pat, and they are having a grand opening sometime next week, I have to keep up with any orders that come in, including updating my store site and my books, and it’s the end of the month and reporting must be do, books updated, etc. etc, etc… oh, and the house needs a really good once over (and child proofing) for the visitors. I also bought a water bed, with drawers underneath that I’m going to turn into a chest of drawers for my “beadroom”. Pictures later. I want to keep up my blogging. It’s fun, too!

Turquoise and Swarovski crystal necklace

Well I’d better get started.

But first, this:
An Antartian boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and back together again.
The boy asked his father, “What is this, Father?” The father [never having seen an elevator] responded “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.”
While the boy and his father were watching wide-eyed, an old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room.
The walls closed and the boy and his father watched small circles of lights with numbers above the walls light up. They continued to watch the circles light up in the reverse direction.
The walls opened up again and a beautiful 24-year-old woman stepped out. The father said to his son, “Go get your mother.”

Respectfully submitted,

Beads and Homework – Rambling on

Posted by Pat J on June 21, 2009

Turquoise and turquoise  dolomite necklace with silver plated accessory beads with sterling silver clasp

Selling is real work for me, while creating the pieces of jewelry is FUN! In hopes of a sale, what do I do? I hand out my cards to anyone who shows interest in an item of jewelry that I am wearing. I tell them about the other pieces that I have made. I often get an impression of style or dislikes in style about people from talking with them. My mind roams through my mental catalog of items that I have already created to that special piece that would look good on him or her. If I don’t have something that I think would suit a person, SO WHAT! I often get some of my best NEW design ideas by talking with someone who doesn’t seem interested in jewelry. I get impressions of color and texture and whether a piece should be casual, or simple, or more ornate and vivid in color. What would look good on this seemingly uninterested person? I know my inventory of products pretty well, but it’s fun to find that certain string of beads that will fit with the design I have in mind. When I make a sale, I see how happy the person is to receive the gift, for herself (himself) or her (his) special person. I get a charge out of seeing a person’s reaction to their new found treasure. Ego? Immediate reaction for a job well done? Ego, or pride in my work.

Memory wire necklace, chevron and silver plated beads

But what of this new “venue” that Ive chosen, Beads I View by Pat, the internet store? How do I reach the people who would be interested in my merchandise? In selling at craft fairs and farmers’ markets, the people are right there, in front of me. Personallities interact. On the internet, that can only happen via the way I present myself in print. I put as much into my store looks and the pictures of items along with their descriptions as I can. Then, I hope that what I have produced is good enough to make a person want to buy from me. I try to do my homework in discovering ways to promote my site so that people will want to visit my store and have trust in the items that I create. One on one interaction is limited to an email or phone call.

Lanyard of glass, wood and other beads

I also sell plain nylon round cord lanyards in purple and blue

I an constantly learning new ways to get the word out about my store and what I sell. I am on a tight budget so I will take all of the free “word of mouth” or word of “email” advertising that anyone wants to give me. If you like my products, please help me get the word out… and If you buy from my store, please use promo code “biv1″ for 10% off on order total (excluding shipping charges) as a big THANK YOU! (promo code good until Sept. 1, 2009).

and just this:
Little Emily was complaining to her mother that her stomach hurt. Her mother replied, “That’s because it’s empty. Maybe you should try putting something in it.” The next day, the pastor was over at Emily’s family’s house for lunch. He mentioned having his head hurt, to which Emily immediately replied, “That’s because it’s empty. Maybe you should try putting something in it.”

I ride a tricycle

Posted by Pat J on June 15, 2009

Why ride a Trike?    It’s fun!  It’s great exercise, and gets me out of the house!  I’m a Jewelry and beaded wearables crafter and work out of my house, so It’s great to put the beads aside for a while, 25 to 55 minutes per day, and get out in the air of the early Arizona mornings and just ride.  My companions are my cell phone and my Ipod nano.  The cell phone is for emergencies only during this time.  I don’t believe in talking on the phone and riding.  I see too many drivers on the phone acting irresponsibly, not paying proper attention to ME or others on the streets.  I also carry my Ipod Shuffle with 900 of my favorite tunes.  I don’t blast it, just high enough in volume to groove with the tunes, but not so high as to not hear everything that is going on around me.  More later…

Meanwhile, why not  visit me at Beads I View by Pat select an item or two or three…  gifts for yourself or even others.

Use promo code “biv1″ for 10% discount off entire purchase (excluding shipping).

Variety and Quiz

Posted by Pat J on June 12, 2009

I continue to try to come up with new ideas for designs in my product lines. I have a few new ways to accessorize with one of my most popular products. The Chapstick necklace came first. I’ve sold quite a few of these over the years. And in trying to keep the idea fresh and versatile, I’ve decided to offer two other ways to keep track of your favorite chapstick. These are pictured below.
They can be found on my web store site at Beads I View by Pat, just check my category for Chapstick Necklaces and Chapstick Holders.

Chapstick key ring – For Him or Her! This chapstick holder is beautifully woven in strong colors of browns and blue with a reinforced loop that hangs on a silver split ring. The attached carabiner may be used to clip it to a belt or belt loop, or perhaps a purse strap. golf bag, fanny pack… Your keys may also be attached via an additional split ring (included). This is a very versatile way to keep track of you favorite chapstick

Chapstick bracelet – this is a convenient way to keep track of your chapstick and have it look good, too. This chapstick holder is woven of transparent blue, brown and tan beads and is hung from a memory wire bracelet as a charm or fob. It fits sizes 6 to 10 inches in diameter. Being connected with a lobster clasp it is also detachable from the bracelet.

Chapstick Necklace – Wear it, bead woven, don’t loose your chapstick, and it looks good, too!

Short Quiz

The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and will tell you whether you are qualified to be a professional. The questions are NOT that difficult.

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say, Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?

Wrong Answer.

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend…. except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory.

Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.
